Close to home: how the horses helped my Mum overcome her OCD.

Updated: Dec 16, 2018

Horses have always been very close my heart and growing up, my parents got me involved in riding from a young age. Eventually, they started to share my love for horses and they decided to get into the hobby themselves. Today, we have four horses at home which the whole family enjoys, both looking after them and riding.

Getting the horses has had a particular significance to my mum however, helping her in more ways than one. Since I was young, my mum has suffered with OCD. ‘Obsessive Compulsive Disorder’ (OCD) is a mental health condition and people suffering can experience anything from compulsive worries to obsessive thoughts which can make them very anxious. It can make life very repetitive and frustrating for people with the condition and this is something my mum would deal with in day to day life.

“ They just gave me a lovely sense of calmness; of wellbeing.”

Since having the horses at home, my mums OCD has improved immensely, even to the point she’d say it’s gone from her life. Being able to say that herself is a huge achievement. Using this natural therapy along side her anti – depressants has helped her come further than she perhaps would of on just one therapy.
